The dates that matter
- 30 June — the Australian financial year ends. All disposals, staking income and airdrops up to this date count for the year.
- 1 July onward — you can start preparing and lodging your return.
- 31 October — deadline to lodge if you're doing it yourself.
- Later (via a registered tax agent) — agents can lodge on extended dates, but you generally must be their client before 31 October.
Don't leave it to October
Pulling a full year of exchange and wallet history together takes time, especially with DeFi and NFTs. Start early: connect your accounts to crypto tax software now, review the transactions it flags, and you'll have an ATO-ready report ready to lodge.
Missed a past year?
If you didn't report crypto in prior years, you can still fix it — amend past returns or lodge late. A crypto-specialist accountant can help you catch up and reduce penalties.
General information only, current as a guide to ATO rules — not personal tax advice. Crypto tax depends on your circumstances. Verify with the ATO or a registered tax agent before you lodge.
