What is data matching?
The ATO obtains transaction and account data directly from Australian crypto exchanges (designated service providers) under its data-matching program. It covers a large share of Australian crypto users and is used to pre-fill and cross-check tax returns.
What the ATO can see
- Your identity details linked to exchange accounts
- Buy and sell transactions
- Wallet addresses in some cases
If your return doesn't match their data, you may get a "please explain" letter or an amended assessment with interest and penalties.
How to stay safe
Report accurately every year. Use crypto tax software to reconcile every exchange and wallet so your figures line up with what the ATO already holds. If your situation is complex or you've fallen behind, get a crypto-specialist registered tax agent to review it before the ATO contacts you.
